Rotted Porch Overhang

This project had a porch overhang with rotting of the exposed roof deck and a couple of rafter ends.
The homeowner got an evaluation and estimate from a roofer who told him the entire roof shingles and roof deck would need to be replaced at a cost of $5000 - $6000. Since the roof shingles had years of life left to them I asked why the roofer wanted to replace the roof down to the rafters. I asked if the roofer went in the attic to look at the underside of the deck. No he did not.
I went into the attic and examined the underside of the deck. It was fine. The rot was confined to the exposed area of the roof deck and some rafter ends. The decay was completely removed and the cavities filled to give the roof integrity. Each bay was further reinforced with plywood held in place with cleats. Rotted sections of rafters were removed. Tight fitting parts were fabricated and installed to replace missing sections. The entire overhang was caulked and painted. The final results were fantastic and the homeowner saved several thousand dollars.
